FIRES

CHRISTCHURCH FAMILY’S NARROW ESCAPE. [Per Press Association.] Christchurch, September 4. Fire this morning destroyed a fiveroomed house, tenanted by H. C. Robinson in Edmore street, The family wera awakened at 1.15 a.m. by the baby crying, and escaped in their night attire just before the roof fell in. The outbreak probably started in the kitchen. OUTBREAK IN PALMERSTON NORTH. [Per Pres* Association.] palmertson North, September 4. Fire at 3.25 a.m. caused considerable damage to premises in Rangitikei street, owned by A. Guy. and occupied by O. H. Fitt, motor-car painter and upholsterer. Four cars were almost totally destroyed. One belonging to Fitt was uninsured, and the others were covered by the owners’ private policies. The building, stock and plant were insured, but the amount is unavailable.
