Information was receive.! last night in Wellington from Mr H. Ljttlejohn, Public Works engineer that the Rimu taka Hill road is again blocked. A large fall has occurred in practically tho same place as the previous one, and it is not expected that the road will bo open before Thursday. The service cars are able to transfer their passengers as before.

Tho Summer Time Bill and Law Practitioners Amendment (Solicitors’ Fidelity Guarantee Fund) Bill were put through the final stages and passed by the Legislative Council yesterday, the latter with minor amendments. Tho Education Amend nent Bill (the Hon. G. M. Thomson), proposing a system of religious instruction in schools, was referred to the education committee for evidence to be taken.

The Hastings Cricket Club will meet at 7.30 o’clock this evening in the Y.M.C.A. rooms.

A dance will be held in the Cosmopolitan Hall, Napier, this evening, for those who wish a pleasant evening after the football match.

Milne, New Plymouth, yesterday, from his son, Scouter Noel Milne. The New . Zealanders would sail for home on September 28th., the cable added.

Tho Hastings Citizens’ Band and others interested, met last night to make arrangements for tho proposed Band carnival. There was a good attendance of ladies and gentlemen, and committees were formed to,organise the details of the carnival, which will be held about tho middle of December.

The South Island re-union and dance will take place in the Hastings Assembly Hall to-night when, as usual at these annual gatherings of the South Islanders and their friends, a most enjoyable evening will be pro, vided. The Grand March takes place at 8 o’clock.

Mr. W. E. Parry (Lab. Auckland Central) asked the Prime Minister in tho House of Representatives yesterday whether, in view of the conflict of opinion concerning the RotoruaTaupo railway he would make the proceedings of the select committee dealing with the subject open to the press. Tho Prime Minister undertook that this should be arranged.

“The country is not justified in spending £3,350,000 in one year on road construction,” declared Mr H. Holland (Christchurch North) in the House of Representatives yesterday). Mr Holland contended that the people must realise that tho figure must be smaller. Application of the pruning knife would do no harm. Motorists were groaning under the weight of taxation, and were looking forward to the present Government giving them some relief.

Information as to the number of youths performing military service was given to the House of Representatives yesterday in response to motions for returns. It was stated that the number of males in the Dominion between the ages of 14 and 20 years excluding Maoris, was as follow’s: — 1926, 90,030; 1927, 92,407; 1928, 94,023. Those actually preforming territorial or cadet service in those years were: 1926, 50,808; 1927, 36 642; 1928, 55,673. The number of cadets connected with schools was 14,911, and the number not connected with schools 13,864. The estimated cost of training clothing, arms and equipment of cadet and territorials was £40,954.

The measures taken by the Public Works Department at Arapuni to check tho erosion below the spillway have proved effective, according to a statement made by Mr. T. Rabone, the officer in charge. Plans were being prepared for more permanent protective works, said Mr. Rabone, and it might be necessary to divert tho flow through the diversion tunnel at tho dam for a time while tho work below tho spillway was being completed. Tho course of action to be followed had not yet been fully decided. Owners of launches, boats and canoes on the Arapuni Lake had been requested by the Public Works Department to haul all eraft clear of the water level and to leave them secured.

“Without being pedantic, I would like to comment, on tho pronunciation of the word ‘England,’ ” said Mr. Farquhar Young at the competitions on Saturday night, when referring to tho recitation, “A Little Bit of England,” for boys 12 and under 14, heard during the morning session (reports tho Poverty Bay Herald). He said some pronounced the word “Ingland” and others “England”; the former -was correct. This matter was thrashed out recently in tho London “Times,” the consensus of opinion being for Ingland, while this view was also supported by tho leading dictionaries. “Anyway,” ho added, “Ingland is good enough for me; England is affectation.”

Much interest is being taken in the announcement that the children of Hastings West and Parkvalo Schools will give a joint production of tho celebrated nonsense play “Alice in Wonderland,” with tho assistance of some of tho Hastings’ and Napier’s leading amateurs. Tho performances will bo given in the Municipal Theatre on Thursday and Friday of next week and will be repeated in the Municipal Theatre, Napier, tho following night. Afout fifty persons are in the east and the costumes are most, handsome, having been specially made for this production. A fine orchestra will play eutr-acto and incidental music, the whole company joining in chorus numbers. Miss Constance'Macdonald is responsible for tho dancing and the whole production is under tho direction of Mr. A. Stanley Warwick, who will bo remembered as the producer of that most successful comedy “Jane.” Prices are based on popular figures with special children’s concessions. Tho plan opens at Fail’s on Saturday next.

The Radio Ball will be held in the Hastings Assembly Hall on Wednesday next. Anyone requiring an invitation should ring phone 211 or 692.

Bewley, with the latest model of His Master’s Voice gramophone. Do not miss this opportunity of enjoying a really good concert and at the same time of helping tho Sunday School funds.

The Hawke’s Bay Licensing Bench met in Hastings to-day, Mr A. M. Mowlem, S.M. presiding. There were also present—Messrs Foster Brook, A. A. George F. C. Wilkinson, A. Rosenberg, and - J. D. Donovan. The following permanent transfers were granted: Pukcteretiri Hotel, from J. R. Fitzpatrick to William J. A. McKeown (Mr Helleur); Bay View Hotel, from P. J. Haines to C. P. Gasgrove. The police reports regard ing all the hotels were satisfactory.
