FIRES
OUTBREAK IN HASTINGS. LITTLE DAMAGE DONE. The Hastings fire bell rang this afternoon at 1.40 o’clock ,and the fact that the outbreak was at the rear of the Carlton Club Hotel caused some excitement, and a crowd quickly gathered at the intersection ot Karamu road and Heretaunga street. The fire, which originated in a store-house at the rear of the hotel and quite separate from the main building, was gathering strength on the arrival of the brigade, but the firemen quickly extinguished the flames, little damage being done except tho burning of portion of t'he store room roofing. The origin of tho fire is unknown, but it is thought that a lighted match or a burning cigarette end may have been thrown amongst the straw bottle covers and other inflammable material in the shed. CHEESE FACTORY DESTROYED. [Per Presß Association ’ Dannevirke, September 3. The Kjritaki co-operative cheese factory was totally destroyed by fire early last evening. The fire is presumed to have been caused by a Spark from the boiler ashes. A gale was blowing at the time, the manager’s house only being saved. The output of ths factory was just over 300 tons of cheese annually., About 100 crates of cheese were destroyed. The insurances are; £5260 on the factory, curing room plant, stock, etc., in the Norwich Union and £4OO on the butter and plant in the South British Co.
Sparks from a chimney caused a firo which destroyed the implement shed and implements, granary and stables on J. Fleming's farm, part of the former Springfield Estate, between Ashburton and Methven.. The horses were saved. The loss is estimated at between £9OO and £lOOO.
