At the Supreme Court at Hamilton Herbert Harry Ellis, aged 28, a farmer, of Hangatiki, who was convicted of stealing 58 ewes, was sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment. Alfred Nicholas Thomas, for theft of a generator, was admitted to probation for twelve months and ordered to pay costs.—Press Association.
The worst north-west gale for some years swept the Ashburton county on Sunday night. Electric light poles were brought down as the result of falling trees. Country reports show that plantations suffered severely. In one belt two miles long, near Methven, it is reported that 75 per cent, of the trees are down. Some trouble was also caused in the telephone and telegraph services.
