DISMAL FUTURE

DISABLED RETURNED SOLDIERS. MR. COATES’S PLEA. A sincere appeal to Parliament to tackle immediately the problem of the disabled returned soldiers was voiced by the Leader of the Opposition (Rt. Hon. J. G. Coates) in the House of Representatives on Wednesday night. Mr. Coates said he knew of twenty men in his own electorate who hadi only one future ahead of them—the old men’s home. Funds of patriotic societies were being rapidly depleted, and estimates of the possible life of the money were proving to have been wrong. An instance was to be found in Auckland, where it was now estimated funds would last seven years as against the twenty calculated upon. It was urgent that Parliament should give careful consideration to the whole question of the men who were breaking up as the result of the war. He recognised that, attributility was one of the problems,' and in addition, the men concerned would crack hardy to the last ditch in preference to making representations. Thes» usually came through the wives.
