REHEARING OF CASE. (Own Correspondent;. The rehearing of a case held two months ago, when John Carson was convicted and fined £2O and costs for allegedly being drunk whilst in charge of a motor car, on Tuesday occupied the attention of Messrs. W. I. Limbrick and F. Holt, J.’sP., who dealt with the case previously. Sergeant Dempsey conducted the case on behalf of the police and Mr. Harker appeared for defendant. Constable Williamson, of Onga Onga, said that on October 9 last he saw defendant and another man get into a car about 6.20 pan. They drove to the hotel and defendant was behind the wheel, and was drunk. “When taxed at the hotel he admitted driving the car but denied being drunk. I took him in charge and on our way to the Police Station Jock Carson, his son, came along and hit me with a bottle, and we then had a scuffle, after which 1 took them both to the police station. I searched defendant and found two bottles of beer and the remains of a bottle of whiskey. On our way to the station defendant noticed that I was bleeding and in a groggy condition, and assisted me on the load.” Mr Harker submitted at this stage that if the defendant were drunk he could not have assisted a man heavier than himself.

Mrs. Hook gave evidence of having seen Carson under the influence of liquor that day. / Defendant gave evidence that on the day in question his son Jock drove defendant and his family from Wakarara to Waipawa. On their return they called at Fletcher’s residence. Onga Onga. He took the car and drove to the hotel, leaving the others at Fletcher’s. At the hotel the constable came and charged him with being drunk. He did not go into the hotel. As he walked from the hotel with the constable, his son came out and he heard the constable say, “I am hit*” Immediately the constable and Jock had a scuffle and both fell to the ground. He had had about six small shandies during the day, but no whiskey. Evidence for the defence was given bv Mrs. Barlow, Mrs. Fletcher, Mr. Mclvor and Mr. P. Antoni. After hearing the evidence the Court felt that it would be necessary to compare the evidence at this sitting with, that at the original hearing. Defendant had appeared at the first hearing and pleaded guilty. Judgment would be reserved ana would probahlv be,given by Mr. Mowlein on his visit on March 14. GENERAL. As a sequel to the recent holiday tennis tournament Mr. H. C. Collett, secretary of the Waipawa Sports Club, has received a cheque for £27 3/- as a donation to the Waipawa Tennis Club. Accompanying the cheque was a letter from Mr. Maurice Smith, secretary of the tournament, expressing the appreciation of the players at the club’s hospitality. At a recent meeting of the Waipawa Plunket Society the report showed a steady increase of visits paid to the Waipawa Institution and to the outlying districts. It was resolved to hold the annual meeting in April. Miss Margaret O’Halloran, who has been studying elocution with Mr. Clement May in Wellington, is on a visit to her parents in Waipawa. Mr. A. E. Jull has returned from a visit to Wellington. Dr. H. J. McLean, C.8.E., of Wellington, who has been spending a few days with his brother. Mr. D. P. McLean, left, in company, with the latter, on a fishing excursion at Tokaanu. Mr. F. Flynn has disposed of his old established business of grocer at Waipawa to Mr. P. Lloyd, of Hokitika, who took possession on Monday. SPORT ACTIVITIES. Tho second round in the Dillon Shield competition between th© Waipukurau and Waipawa Bowling Clubs eventuated during the week-end, Waipawa winning in three out of four rinks by a margin of five points. Following are the scores (Waipawa names first): — Houghton, King, Davy, Dailey (s) 26 v. McGrath, Turner, Warren, Martin (s), 17; Patterson, Ireland, Haldane, Will (s) 27 v. Cowper, Gibson, Butler. Saunders (s), 16; Wallace, P. Dillon, Gren side, Critehley (s), 20 v. Rowlands, Fraser, Richards, Foot (s), 19; Walker, Clark, Tarlov, Holt (s), 12 v. Bowen. Jones. White, Gardner (s) 28.

The final in the Waipawa Croquet tournament resulted in Mrs. Given defeating J. Hindman bv 26—14. At tho conclusion of play Mr. Critchlby, on behalf of the Sports'Club, thanked the croquet section for promoting and carrying through tile tournament, the ladies who had supervised the tea and luncheon arrangements, also flic visitors for their support, and the donors of prizes. Mrs. W. I. Limbrick, president, then distributed tho prizes. Mrs. H. D. Limbrick. secretary of tile section, on behalf of the players, presented Mr. H. C. Collett with a fountain pen in appreciation of his services as supervisor and Mrs. W. I. Limbrick presented Mrs. H. D. Limbrick with a fruit dish and dainty cups and saucers as a token of appreciation of her services as secretary.

Included in the cricket games played in Central Hawke’s Bay during the week-end was one between the Waipawa and Waipukurau District High Schools. Each side had won an equal number of games during the season’s competition prior to Saturday last, the match resolving itself into a convincing one. The game was played on Coronation Park, Waipawa and resulted in a win for tile Waipawa team by 52 runs. In Waipawa’s first innings, totalling 37, the only don hie-figure scorer was Lockhart, with 15. The best scorers in it he second innings (99) were Petheriek (43), Flvnn (26). and Knobloch 16. Reidv took 8 wickets in lioth innings for 49. Wainuknrau scored 35 in the first and 29 in th© second innings. McCiirthv making 17 and Cameron 16. Flynn, with 8 wickets for 20, was the best bowler.
