TALL SCORING ONCE AGAIN UNITED AND SCINDB FADE Bl6t ODDS. PIRIE MAKES A CENTURY. Once again there was toll scoring in the Hawke’s Bay cricket competition games. On Saturday two innings realised over 300 each. Apart from this there were several substantial individual knocks. The biggest was that of D. Pirie, who contributed the ninth century of the season. Heretaunga were pitted against United. The Hastings lads batted all the afternoon to knock up 306 tor the loss of five wickets. In the other game Technical College Old Boys, after an indifferent start, made a gallant recovery and compiled 365. They then collected one wicket for 12 runs from Scinde before stum;,: were drawn. HERETAUNGA v| UNITED. The Hastings lads had first strike against United and went on to a wicket that was slippery. As the afternoon wore on, however, the wicket developed into a batsman*’s paradise. Consequently good scoring eventuated. The Beuth Brothers opened the innings. Cyril was first to go with the score at 68. It had been slow scoring as the bowlers were in good form. Merle Beuth was playing great cricket, and scoring rapidly. He and Gilbertson passed the first hundred before Gilbertson was bowled. Craig joined the opening batsman, who continued his scoring until he was 90. He was then foolishly run out after knocking a six and 14 hours. Six runs later the fourth wicket fell with the total at 152. R. Hudson was next in. He and Craig held the attackers at bay, and added nearly a hundred runs between them before Cra-'g was also run out after contributing 49. Hudson was joined by Vogtherr. Again the attack failed and when stumps were drawn at 6.30 p.m. the total was 306 for five wickets. Hudson was 83, including a dozen fours, and Vogtherr was 31. Details: — HERETAUNGA. C. Old Boys opened with Stephenson and Elliott. The latter went early and was followed by Rouse a run l:/r. Evans joined Stephenson and the pair brought the total to 92 When the opening batsman was caught after contributing a good 57, which included eight boundaries. Shepherd was next m. He lost no time in scoring but when the total was 130 he lost Evans. The retiring batsman had made 41, including three fours. Nairn failed to open his account, and shortly afterwards Shepherd was caught' trying to collect a second sixer. The score, 146 for 6, did not look too promising for Old Boys when Hardaker and Pirie became associated. The latter was very lucky, but nevertheless he scored rapidly. So did Hardaker and the pair added 143 before they were separated. Hardaker was first to go. He made 85, including 14 boundaries. Plested saw Pirie run into three figures and also pass the third century before the slogger was caught after knocking a six and 14 fours. The tail enders made a few runs in quick time and when the last wicket fell the total was 365., Scinde were left with about 30 minutes to plqy out. The light was bad, so the usual batting order was reversed. When stumps were drawn One wicket had fallen for 12 runs. Details:— OLD COLLEGIANS. First Innings. * Stephenson, c and b J.
