SOME FINE PERFORMANCES. LAY AND MISS BARRON AT MANAWATU. Palmerston, March 3. At. the Manawatu Athletic Club meeting yesterday afternoon, S. Lay. (Hawera) threw the javelin 216 foot 5J inches, which is 10 feet 5 inches linger than the Australian and New Zealand record. The wind, which had been blowing gustily across the line of flight, ceased while Lay was throwing so the effort may be regarded as accomplished in a calm. A special cha’lenge race between Miss Norma Wilson (Gisoorue) and Miss Phyllis Stewart (Wairoa) did not eventuate, owing to the former, , being ill, Her . place was taken by Miss Barron (Foxton), who beat the Wairoa runner over 100 yards by seven yards, in 11 4-5 secs. Running subsequently in another 100 yards, off .scratch, Miss Barrons time was 11 2-5 sees, equal to the New Zealand record.
