OBITUARY

MR SAM CHARLTON. The news of the death of Mr Samuel Charlton, which occurred at his residence, Karamu road. Hastings, this morning, though not unexpected, will be learnt in Hastings and throughout the district with genuine sorrow. The deceased, who was 66 years of age, was born in the County Tyrone, Ireland, and came to New Zealand with his parents as a boy, landing at Napier. Taking up the trade of saddler he worked at the establishment of the late Mr John McVay for many years, after which he started storekeeping at Kaikora North (now Otane) in general business and sadlery. Leaving there, he took over the To Aute Hotel and, some years later, came to Hastings, where he purchased the freehold of the Railway Hotel (now the Grand) from the late Mr W. A. Beecroft, He conducted the Railway Hotel successfully for some years, when he sold out to Robiohns’. and went into the Criterion Hotel at Napier, and later assumed control of the Carlton Club Hotel, Hastings. T caving there he went to Taupo, where he ran the. Spa Hotel ns his last venture until failing health compelled him to retire into private life. He then returned to Hastings, amongst his old friends, where he gradually became worse, until his end came as a release after an illness extending over some eighteen months. He was a good friend and a keen business man, full of energy and enterprise, generous, charitable and sympathetic, characteristics which earned for him esteem and popularity amongst tho general public, with whom he had such a long, wide and intimate association.

He leaves a widow and a grown-nn family consisting of Messrs Leslie Charlton (Tnnpo). Fred Chariton (Hastings') and Reg. Chariton (Rotorua). and Mrs France and Miss Eva Charlton, of Hastings, with whom deen sympathy is expressed.
