WELLINGTON WITHOUT POWER
GREAT INCONVENIENCE CAUSED STEAM PLANT BROUGHT INTO USE. (Per Preen Association.) Wellington, March 1. Wellington has been without power from the Government hydro-electric system since 5.25 o’clock this morning, and the city was tramless until 8.15 o’clock, when the steam plant at Evans Bay was got going. Tramways and observation ’buses did their best to meet the situation, but great inconvenience was experienced by early workers, especially those in the more outlying parts. From a statement by Mr F. T. Kissell, chief Government electrical engineer. the trouble appears to be similar to what occurred on Wednesday on the Wanganui line—dust accumulating on the transmission line and the insulators becoming damp with fog or mist and forming a conductor, causing the insulators to flash over. The trouble on this occasion is on both lines from Mangahao to Wellington.
