U.S. NAVAL BUILDING BILL

WASHINGTON ALARMED AT DELAY. REPUBLICAN LEADERS CONFER. [Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) (Received 22, 11.30 a.m.) Washington, Jan. 21. Washington is alarmed at the continued delay in the Naval Building Bill. Republican leaders held a conference with Senator Curtis and decided to use strenuous efforts to prevent the blockage of the measure. A conference was called by the chairman, Mr Hale, of the Senate Naval Commitee, who complained that bis naval bill was being buffeted by appropriation bills which have the right of way. He said: “We suspected a subtle filibuster against the Naval Bill and asked the co-operation of leaders to prevent delay. Fearing that if the delay continues another week the bill will be involved in a filibuster which will prevent its enactment before March 4, the Leaders agreed to have the Senate meet an hour earlier and adjourn an hour later each day to hasten the appropriation bills, and agreed that night sessions might be necessary next week. ’ ’ If the way was not then cleared, he stated, it would, at any rate, not permit the bill to be jeopardised.
