BOWLING

WEEK-END PLAY

SHIELD AND OTHER GAMES.

ST LEONARDS v. PORT AHURIRI

Two rinks from each club were in action on Saturday, St. Leonards metaphorically annihilating the Port men, the latter emerging from the play much damaged in prestige. Playing beautiful bowls, the Hastings four were early in the lead, the position on the 14th head being 17—11 in favour of the visiting rink. In the remaining seven heads the Port Mac succeeded in obtaining a solitary single, meanwhile the other Mac and his merry men carried their total to 26 and secured the best win of the day. Hastings players secured 13 heads and the Port eight heads. At the outset it appeared that McLeay (Port) was in for a severe defeat against Raeburn’s four. The latter’s rink played strongly from the outset and at one period the board showed 14—3 in St. Leonards' favour. After the tea adjournment the Port four played better bowls than previously. and carried MeLeay’s total to 16, while Raeburn succeeded in bringing his final score to 19—a better finish than mar.v anticipated.
