GENERAL NOTES

Nominations for the H.B. Hunt Club’s winter meeting close to-night (Friday).

At a special meeting of stewards of the Carterton Racing Club held on Tuesday evening it was decided to alter the date for the annual race meeting from 13th October to 6th October for the Masterton Racing Club to hold its meeting on 13th October. The latter club had applied for 6th October, to which the Carterton Club objected, as it followed too closely on its date.

Bisox, who has a Winter Cup engagement, is to. be Hawera’s sole representative at Riccarton. On Saturday she had her final work-out before leaving home. Starting well below the mile post, she went a good three-quarter pace to the five furlongs post, where the pace was clapped on, and timed from the half-mile, she ran home quite comfortably in 54|secs. This is regarded as a good effort, and she is expected to show up well at Biccarton. The pace in the early stages may trouble her in the Winter Cup.

At the annual meeting of the Carterton Racing Club the chairman, Mr. W. Howard Booth, said that the stewards had been asked by the Trentham trainers, J. Gage Williams and S. Reid, to include a race on the programme for two-year-olds, but had, after careful consideration, decided that such a race would not be a profitable one to the club. The penalty of 51b incurred at the Wellington meeting by a horse winning at Taratahi was considered to giveowners some doubt about racing at Taratahi, and the Wellington Club had been approached to do away with this penalty, and in place of it to rehandicap a winner at Taratahi. This, it was considered, would meet the case equally as well as the penalty imposed.

The steeplechase course at Riccarton will be practically the same as that erected twelve months ago. a tie dimensions of the fences are as follow:—Cutts brush 4ft 11 jin, 4ft on top; first sod wall, 3ft 4in, 2ft wide; second sod wall, 3ft Bin, 4ft wide, with ditch 4ft in front; Kennels doubles, first 4ft Bin uroom over sod wall, post and rails, with ditch 4ft in front; second, 3ft Sin, broom over post and rails. 78ft between the two fences; brush at top of straight 4ft 9fin; carriage paddock brush 4ft 4in and double brush hurdles in front of stand. The carriage paddock brush will be the first and last to be encountered in the Grand National Steeplechase, and in the three and ahalf mile journey candidates will have to negotiate twenty-one jumps.

Malmsey was one of the last of the bunch in the Brabazon Handicap half a mile from home, and in finishing fourth she ran a good race. She is in the Winter Cup and also in the Cashmere Plate on the . first day at the Grand National meeting. Recently she has been suffering _ from a poisoned heel, but if all right next week will be in demand for the latter event if started.

The English sire Day Comet, who has been in the Waikato for the past 12 years, was recently purchased by Sir George Clifford. Day Comet was railed south from Frankton on Sunday night, and is to have his headquarters at the Stoneyhurst stud. Day Comet’s stock are numerous in the Waikato province, and they have done well in the matter of stakeearning since they have been racing.

Hoylake hag done well during the winter, and it is anticipated that the imported grey will be seen to advantage during the season. At the Grand National meeting last year he was favourite for the Woolston Plate, but was unplaced. However, on the third day he won the Longbeach Handicap, six furlongs. He has run fairly well since then, winning two other races and being placed on five other occasions. Hoylake has engagements at the forthcoming National meeting.
