HOSPITAL SUBSIDIES
REQUEST FOR A REFUND. MINISTER’S REMARKS. [Per Press Association.! Palmerston N., May 28. The Minister of Health, the Hon. J. A. Young, who is visiting Palmerston North for the purpose of opening the maternity home at the hospital, met a deputation from the Hospital Board which asked the Minister for a refund of the subsidy which the Board this year had been called on to make to the Department totalling £l6OO. It was stated that in the first year of operation the refund had reduced the rate of the Board’s subsidy to 13/-, which was 1/- under the lowest subsidy receivable under the schedule.
In reply, Mr. Young said he had endeavoured more heavily to subsidise the poorer districts, which received a higher rate of subsidy than wealthier districts. If he found that the subsidy principle could not be worked satisfactorily, he was prepared to ask the Government to legislate' so that no board should receive less than 14/-.
