PHOSGENE EXPLOSION
STATEMENT BY MANUFACTURERS.
ATTITUDE OF BRITISH GOVERNMENT. [United Press Assn.—By CableCopyright.) [Australian and N.Z. Press Assn.l (Received 24, 9.10 a.m.) New York, May 23. A supply of the deadly phosgene gas which caused twelve deaths in Hamburg is stored in isolated buildings at Fords, New Jersey. It is alleged that it is used in the manufacture of fine medicinal chemicals. The firm owning the plant stated that the greatest precautions were taken to prevent its escape and also to protect their employees’ health. QUESTION IN COMMONS. AS TO GOVERNMENT ACTION. (British Official Wireless.) (Received 24, 10,35 a.m.) Rugby, May 23. The, Foreign Secretary was asked in Parliament to-day whether his attention had been called to the accident at Hamburg, where a tank containing fluid for the manufacture of poison gas exploded, and whether, in view of the terms of the Treaty of Versailles, it was proposed to make a representation to the German Government on the subject. Sir Auten Chamberlain replied that he had received no information except what had appeared in the press, and that he was not in a position to say whether there were any grounds for representations to the German Government. He was taking steps to get further information
