A message from the Mather mine states that' the authorities have abandoned all hope of rescuing any more of the entombed mine's alive. It is finally estimated that the number of dead i s 197, The bodies of 164 of these have now been recovered. and 33 are still unaccounted for. but more bodies are being discovered hourly. Some of these are still limp and warm, and indicate that the victims lived many hours after entombment.
