WOMEN MEDICAL STUDENTS » : LONDON HOSPITALS' DECISION. “MIXED SCHOOLS A FAILURE. ” [By Cable — Pres« Aim. — Copyright.] R(eceived, 20, 12.5) London, March, 20. The future education of women doctors is at present disturbing med ical feminist circles in London owing to five hospitals... namely London, Charing Cross, Westminster, King's College, and St. George’s...banning further women students, due to tho attitude of the males, who declare that women interfere with athletics, are a distraction to studies and do not make successful doctors. They also aver that medicine is an unfit subject for mutual study. This decision has aroused considerable controversy, feminists asserting that it would be outrageous if athletic ambitions were allowed to override the medical education of women, which is essential in national interests. They are urging women not to subscribe to hospitals where women are not admitted. On the other hand, a Harley Street specialist expresses the opinion that the decision is wise. Doctors general ly agree that mixed medical schools are an utter failure and he adds that where women are admitted the males are dropping athletics, which create valuable esprit de corps, and turn to social distractions, teaparties, and become "poodle-fakers.” Women ought to have their own schools where they may evolve their own traditions and school spirit. OPPORTUNITIES INCREASING. Dr. Winifred Cullio, replying to the suggestion that women doctors are frequently unemployed, denies that they are unsuccessful and adds that their opportunities are increasing. Women are always glad to have doctors of their own sex practising in the district. The next development in the hospitals sex war will occur when Dr Graham-Little contests the legality ,cf the han at the London University Senate’s meeting on March 21. when he will out that a sex han is illegal under the status. He wil.l be supported by the Westminster Hospital's delegate. (A. and N. Z.)
