RETAIL TOBACCO TRADE.

THE NEW ACT. HASTINGS MAKING A MOVE. There appears to be some uncertainty as to when The Shops and Offices Amendment Act of 1927 comes into force in this district, but when it does, the effect will he that all shops in which tobacco and smoking requisites are sold will be required to close at the hours fixed for the closing of regular tobacconists’ shops In Wellington the Act will come into force on Monday next, but the date of its application to Auckland has not been gazetted. The procedure necessary for the gazetting of th© notice is that the tobacconists doing business hi any town must present a requisition, signed by two-thirds of their number, calling upon the Minister to declare certain closing times to h- observed by all tobacconists in the town and about a week after the receipt of such requisition the hours stated will be gazetted, whereupon all shops selling tobacco and smoking requisites as a side-line must fall into step with the regular tobacconists in the matter of closing, or else abandon the sale of tobacco and such other articles which will conflict' with the tobacco trade. Such a requisition has been already forwarded from Napier and the Gazette notice will soon appear. Though a similar movement is about to be made in Hastings it has not yet taken practical shape.
