THE ESSEX TRAGEDY
MURDER OF CONSTABLE. ACCUSED MAN CHARGED. (Received 7, 12.15 p.m.) London Feb. 6. Kennedy Browne has been charged with the murder of Constable Gutteridge.. Constable Gutteridge was found shot on a lonely Essex road on September 27. There were four bullet wounds in the body, the shots having been fired at close range. A doctor’s motor-car, stolen the same night, was found abandoned the next day. There was a spent revolver cartridge found in the car of the same calibre as that which killed the constable. The revolver was later discovered in the Thames. The case baffled Scotland Yard. It was believed that the constable had stopped the car and was questioning the occupants when he was shot. At the inquest a verdict of murder against a person or persons unknown was returned.
