Verandahs and. roofs were torn from a number of buildings and the flying iron caused considerable damage. Telegraphic communication fs interrupted. St, Cuthbert’s Troubles: Four hundred people walked out of St. Cuthbert’s. Darwen, before the sermon, and hundreds followed tho vicar to his home, but there was no hostile demonstration. Arbitration Treaty: Yesterday fit Washington, the French Ambassador and the United States Under-Secre-tary of State, Mr Olds, were to have signed the new- Franco-American arbitration treaty, marking the one one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of the original treaty of amity and commerce between the two countries in 1778. The preamble of the treaty states it is desired of the two countries always to settle their differences by peaceful means. Questions involving France’s obligation under the League of Nations, those affecting the Monroe Doctrine and those of a purely domestic character are exempted from arbitration.
