MAGISTRATE’S SITTING IN NAPIER. A MAORI WITH LENGTHY LIST. At the sitting of the Magistrate’s Court, Napier, this morning. Mr J. G. L Hewitt. S.M.. presided and dealt with the following cases Thos. L. Davis, charged with procuring liquor while prohibited, was lined £l, costs 10s. That at Gisborne, on January 30, 1928, he did, with intent to defraud, obtain a motor ticket valued at £3 5s and the sum of £3 5s from die Duco Motor Service by false pretences. to wit a valueless cheque lor £6 10s. drawn on the Bank of New South Wales, was the charge laid against Apirana Tripuna, alias Tipnna Aparima, alias Wiremu Henare. The accused pleaded guilty. Detective Butler stated that the accused went to the Duco office and asked for a return ticket, presenting a cheque and receiving £3 5s in change. He presented his bankbook. in which the last two pages were gummed together, so purporting to give him a credit of £3l). whereas there wag a debit. “Has he any previous convictions?” asked His Worship. “Oh only twenty!” replied the detective. While perusing the list His Worship remarked that the accused had ben running into trouble all the way. He was sentenced to nine months' imprisonment CIVIL CASES. Judgment by default was given in the following instances: —Hislop and Lawry v. L. J. B. Hammond, £3 18s, costs £1 Hs <id; Grant-and Howell v. W. Piki, £l9 Ils lOd, costs £4 7s; Commissioner of Taxes v. David Jenkins, £3 Is 3d, costs ss; T.M.V. Wines, Ltd. v. P. DiDUon, £1 6s, costs Ils; T.M.V. Wines, Ltd. v. L. J. Potroy £2 Bs, costs £2 8s 6d; Margaret M. Arnott v. Wi Taunou £ll 16s lOd, costs £3 3s; T. C. Moore v. Theo Dodimski £3 4s, costs £1 4s 6d. Judgment Summonses — Mihaere Anaru was ordered to pay Grant and Howell 15s a month off his debt of £2O 5s 9d in default 18 days’ imprisonment; W. McLean was ordered to pay the Daily Telegraph 5s a week off a debt of £2 10s 3d, in default 3 days’ imprisonment.
