INCOME TAX EXEMPTION FOR STATE TRADING CONCERNS GAS CHAIRMAN’S PROTEST. (Per Press Association). Auckland, Feb. 6. At the annual meeting of the Auckland Gas Company Mr. J, H. Upton, chairman, referred to the inequitable incidence of income tax w-hereby the Gas Company’s very active rivals, the Auckland Electric Power Board, were exempted while the Gas Company paid £217,500. it was a differential tax round only in half-civilised countries, “But,” continued Mr. Upton, “our Government is superior to all that and is a law unto itself and no redress is made. Consider what would happen were the Government to extend its operations a little further and undertake the whole business of the country and apply the same method of exemption as now is applied to municipal and Government trading. All business would be exempt and the revenue would have to be found by lawyers, agents, and teachers, doctors, editors of newspapers, and by the professional classes—in fact, aided by any of the unfortunate old people who, under happier circumstances, had saved a few pounds for their old age.”
