MIRACULOUS ESCAPE
BRAKES FAIL TO ACT. OAR RUSHES DOWN HILL. Last Friday, at about 7 p.m., Messrs Robert Tutaki and Henn Pourere, with his wife and two children, aged respectively six and 15 years ot age, had a miraculous escape from death while motoring down the Waikare hill, at th© gorge. Alter leaving the top of the hill, the brakes failed to act and when the car had attained a speed of about 40 miles an hour, Mr. Tutaki jumped out into the ditch, sustaining a broken collarbone. The remainder of the party retained their seats, and the car, accumulating speed, careered on its way until Mr. Pourere, who was driving, in order to escape going over tha steep bank directed it into the water channel, at an angle which brought the bottom of the car into contact with the edge of the channellin. which acted as a brake and lessened the impact when the car ran into the hill a little further on. Mr. Hemi Pourere and his family escaped injury beyond the natural shaking and shock, but the car was badly knocked about.
