MOTORS v. RAILWAYS
VICTORIAN DIFFICULTIES. RESULT IN FINANCIAL CHAOS. (Received 4, 10.30 a.m.) Melbourne, Feb. 4. Speaking at Warrnambool with regard to railway retrenchment, the Premier, Mr. E. J- Hogan, said the Railway Department and closer settlement activities had become financial catastrophies. The State was losing £1,000,900 on these activities. Motor competition was a serious thing for the railways. LABOUR FIGHTS DISMISSALS. (Received 4, 10.30 a.m.) Melbourne, Feb. 4. The Trudes Hall Council decided to seek a conference with the Parliamentary Labour Party to advise tho Railway Union to hold stop-work meetings till all tho men dismissed were reinstated. There is much opposition in union circles to the retrenchment proposals.
