THE FRENCH NAVY
CONSTRUCTION REVIVAL. EXPENDITURE HEAVILY INCREASED (Received 5, 8.40 a.m.) London, Jan. 4. “The Times’s’’ Paris correspondent says that 1927 was the decisive year regarding French naval revival. Twenty-five ships, including submarines, were commissioned and 24 laid down. Credits were voted fo r 19 of these and three' air squadrons were created. The cost of new construction amounted to £10,728,000 in 1927, against £2,880,000 in 1924. The first two complete series of post-war vessels will be ready for service in 1932, including nine cruisers, 21 flotilla leaders, 36 destroyers, 48 submarines, and numerous auxiliaries. £2.000,000 annually will be spent to provide oil storage at Brest and Toulon. The existing 18 air squadrons will have increased to 50 by 1938,—(“Times” cable.)
