Mr. J. S. Barton, S.M., returned to Wanganui at the week-end from Wellington.
Mr. J. Lythgoe, engineer to the Grey Power Board, has forwarded his resignation, says a Press Association message from Greymouth.
Mr. John G. Hogan, who has been on a visit to his parents in Hastings, left this morning on his return to Dannevirke.
Misses F. Wiffin and M. Sargent, who have been on a visit to Mr. and Mrs. J. Hogan,of Hastings, left on their return to Dannevirke this morning.
The engagement is announced of Elsie Hamilton, younger daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. 11. Wilson, of Hokitika, to Janies Thomas, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Burrows, Richmond, Christchurch.
Mr. J. 0. Baird, of Longlands, II lings, lias been appointed judge of draught horses at the Manawatu A. and P. Show, to be held next month, and Mr. W. J. Gimblett, of Hastings, judge of Shropshire and Ryeland sheep.
A Dunedin message reports the death of Police Superintendent Murray, at the age of 60. Supt. Murray joined the force 36 years ago, serving first on the clerical staff at Christchurch. He succeeded the late Supt. Mathieson at Dunedin last December. Supt. Murray enjoyed good health until a few weeks ago, when an operation was found necessary.
The funeral of the late Mr. Charles Ellison, of Havelock North, was held yesterday morning at St. Luke’s Church, and afterwards at the Havelock North Cemetery- Punctually at 9.3(1, the lorry containing the casket entered the church giounds being met by the Rev. Canon Maclean, who conducted the service, while the hymns “Lead Kindly Light” and “Abide with Me” were sung by the very large congregation who had assembled from all parts of Hawke’s Bay, and comprised meniliers of the family and the public bodies with which the deceased had been connected. The service was a simple one and at the close the organist played ’ O Rest in the Lord,” as the coffin left the church. About 80 cars followed to the cemetery. Hie wreaths sent from public bodies were very beautiful and included the following, in addition to those of the family and many friends Office staff of Messrs. Ellison and Duncan Ltd. Ellison and Duncan’s staff, Hawke’s Bay County Council, Napier Harbour Board, Napier Chamber of Commerce, Soft Goods Warehousemen, Robjohn, Hindmarsh and Co.. Blythes Ltd.’s staff. Hawke's Bay Soap and Tannery Co., Hereworth School Trust Board, Blythes Ltd.’s staff, Dannevirke, Royal Exchange Insurance, Hawke’s Bay Motor Co., Mr Russell Duncan, Sir Douglas McLean. . At the close ol the service, a beautiful bunch oi forget-me-nots and a cross of arum lilies were laid on the coffin.
