A mild shock of earthquake was experienced in Hastings at 8.10 yesterday morning. The shake was steady and rattled the windows, but did not last long.

Some light may be thrown on the recent mysterious explosions in coal by the fact that a portion of a plug of gelignite in its original wrapping has been found in a truck of coal delivered in New Plymouth.-

An unfortunate error occurred in the obituary of the late Mr, C, Ellison, which stated that Mrs. Bernard Chambers was a sister of the late gentlemen. This should have been Mrs. Mason Chambers.

A level crossing smash occurred at Styx, near Christchurch, at noon on Saturday. A motor ear with two occupants was struck by a workers’ train from Belfast. The car was turned completely round by the blow, and was badly smashed, but neither of the occupants was injured.

“The petrol pump craze has not penetrated to Gisborne,” remarked a Wanganui man who had just returned from the Poverty Bay town. “I was told there that the garages had considered the matter of installations and had decided against such projects, their decision having had the effect of blocking enterprise outside of the trade.”

An exceptionaly rare and magnificent specimen of the golden kowhai is now in full bloom in the Anglican Church grounds, Taradale. The tree, which is about 20 feet high, is a great mass of bloom which hangs from the branches in fine clusters. In the bright sunshine the effect is most beautiful, and is an object of admiration to large numbers of visitors motoring through the district.

At Friday’s meeting ot the War Relief Association in Welling, on, the following resolution was carried unanimously:—“ln view of the increasing demands for support by destitute returned soldiers, it is a direction to the fiananco committee that restriction must bo placed on advances by way of loans and that in future no such advances shall bo made, except to disabled soldiers suffering from economic loss as tho result of their physical impairment; such advancement not to exceed £lOOO in any one case for the acquisition of residential property only.

Tho New Zealand Shipping Company has received advice to the effect that the R.M.S. Remuera left Southampton on Friday last for Wellington.

On Saturday in the Havelock North Domain a seven-a-side football tournament was played between Napier, Taradale, Hastings and Havelock Presbyterian Bible Classes, Havelock North being the winners. A basketball tournament for the girls was held on the Public School grounds, Havelock North being victorious. Afternoon tea was supplied by the ladies of the Havelock Bible Class Committee.
