The jockey who has the worse Cor liquor on going to the starting post would fare badly these days either in England, New Zealand, or Australia, but it was not so in the so-called' ‘ ‘ good old days. ’ ’ Bearing on this the London “Sporting Life” has the following relative to a once prominent English jockey: “Snowden was one of the best riders of his time, but unfortunately, the ‘cup that cheers’ •was his own worst enemy. More often that not in his later years poor Jem was as ‘bleend’ as a bat when he went down to the post but even in that state he could 'ride the heads off’ most of his contemporaries. One day on the Knavesmire he was asked by a trainer not to win a ‘ seller by more than a neck as the owner desired to buy the horse in cheaply. To the consternatoin of all concerned, Jem jumed off like a shot from a gun, made every yard of the running, and cafitcred in by six lengths. As it cost a lot "to buy the horse in at the subquent auction, the owner complained bitterly to a friend of Snowden’s. ‘Thou tell him he was lucky t’win at all,’ was Jem’s sarcastic reply, ‘I saw five winning posts, lad, and didn’t know which was t height ’un: ’ ” “You have there hit the nail on the head.”.—Rabelaid.
