MONTHLY STATISTICS

HASTINGS AND NAPIER. BUILDING. Mr A. C. Fawcett. Borough Inspector of Buildings, furnishes the following returns :— Eight new dwellings, value £6090: one addition to dwelling, value £250: two additions to business premises, value £1332; five motor sheds, value £240. Total, 16 permits, value £7912. For the corresponding months of 1926. 24 permits were issued of a value of £12,753. and 111 permits were issued since Ist April of a value of £64,112. For the corresponding period oi 1926, 103 permits were granted of a value of £53,768. Building permits issued bv the Napier Borough Council during Septembei totalled the value of £11.923. as against £B2BO for Septembr 1926. Nine permits were issued for new dwellings, which is the largest number for one month received 1 for a considerable time. HEALTH. Mr A. C. Fawcett. Hastings Inspector of Health, reports nine cases of infectious diseases, as compared with one case reported in September last year. VITAL. Following are the vital statistics for Hastings during September, the figures for September last year being in parentheses:— Births, 33 (22); marriages 8 (10); deaths 11 (16). The figures for the previous nine months are shown be low, the returns for last year’s period being shown in parentheses.— Births, 287 (284): marriages. IUI (95); deaths. 108 (102). The vital statstics for Napier for the nine months ended September 30 do not compare favourably with those of the same period of 1925 and 1926. Births show a decrease of 21 on 1925 and 22 on 1926. Deaths show an increase of 16 on 1926 nnd 55 on 1925. Marriages show an improvement of 15 on 1926 and 8 on 1925. The figures are as follow, those for 1926 being shown in narentheses : —Births, 353 (374); deaths. 202 (186): marriages. 137 (122). During the month of Sentember there were 16 births. 29 deaths and 18 marriages. BANKRUPTCY. Petitions in bankruptcy filed with the Deputy Official Assignee at Napier during September numbered four, as compared with seven in September of 1926. These figures bring the total • iiilings in the nine months of 1927 to 39 and in the same period of 1926 to 35. IN OTHER CENTRES. i Owing to fewer Home boats dis charging at Dunedin during September. the Customs revenue collected fell a good deal below that collected in September of last vear. The following are the returns, with those for last year’s period in parentheses:— Customs £58,755 4s 6d (£80.410 3s lid), beer £20,253 12s 6d (£18.208 4s 9d). The figures for the July-Sep-tember quarter are .-— Customs £232. 675 Is 4d (£207,033 2s 4d), beer £51,814 13s 8d (£51.362 7s 4d). A decrease of £33,233 is shown >n the Customs duties collected ot Christchurch in September in com parison with August. It is attributed to the tariff revision. The nett Customs for September. 1927. were £83,209, and September. 1926. £127,790. For the quarter 1927 the total was £287,276, and in 1926 £289746. Beer duty totalled September. 1927. £5947. and 1926 £6147. For the quarter in 1927 the total was £20,144. and in 1926 £19,785. The vital statistics for Dunedin foi September, as compared with the same month last vear. are as follow, last year’s being given in parentheses :—Deaths. 75 (74): births. 118 (126); marriages. 67 (44). The figures for the quarter July to September, with those for the corresponding quarter last year are:—Deaths. 257 (303): births. 380 (401): marriages. 180 (140).
