HIT BY TARIFF

GOLD DREDGING ON COAST. DUTIES CURTAIL DEVELOPMENT. (Per Prefls Association). HOKITIKA. October 1. Concern is felt locaJlv for the future of the mining of gold by dredg. ing on a large scale by reason of toe heavy impost imposed under the amending customs tariff. The former duty was 10 per cent, on British and 15 per cent, on general imports. It is now proposed to increase this to 20 per cent on British and 40 tier cent, general. It is ascertained that the advance will have the effect of curtailing local expansion. Prospecting has ben in progress at Kumara and elsewhere, seeking new areas, but i| will be quite impossible to install suitable equipment plants for hard, low grade ground under the new tariff. Machinery cannot be provided in the Dominion equal to requirements, and plant will have to be imported, but the tariff charges proposed are far too high. Local bodies and others are making representations to the Government on the matter
