BABY BORN AT SEA.
ON DAY WHEN TIME IS ALTERED. Little Joan McDermott really hasn’s a regular birthday. She was born at sea, on the Mataroa, on the day when the time is altered. Her birthday can be either September 22, according to English time, or September 23, according to New Zealand time. Joan was made much of by the other passengers, though she doesn’t know it yet. The sum of £lO was subscribed for her In the third saloon and the captain of the Mataroa presented her with a cup. When the ship berthed at Auckland on Monday afternoon both Joan and her mother were in hospital, but perfectly well; Mr and Mrs M K McDermott, her parents, come from Drog heda, Ireland. Joan may have a second name — it may be Mataroa.
