HOSPITAL SYSTEM
DR. MacEACHERN’S REPORT MAIN RECOMMENDATIONS. A DOMINION BOARD. Wellington, Sept. 28. The final report of Dr. MaeEachcrn on the hospital system of New Zealand nas been received by the New Zealand branch of the 8.M..A and the Hospital Boards' Association. It follows in general the lines of the preliminary report submitted by Dr. MacEacbern prior to his leaving New Zealand. Dr. MacEaehern’s main recommcu dations are: — (1) That there should be a Dominion hospital board comprised of representatives of the Health Department the B.M.A. and hospital boards to determine and co-ordinate the main features of the hospital policy. (2) Redistribution of hospital districts, with a reduction in number. (3) The addition of pay wards in general hospitals to provide accommodation for all sections of the community. (4) A wider adoption of the principle of honorary medical staffs for public hospitals. (5) Abolition of present system of superintendent in many hospitals carrying on dual vocations administrative and clini<|il and giving full time to the former only. (G) Promotion of more voluntary effort and community spirit in connection with Dominion hospitals. In accordance with arrangements made just before Dr. MacEaehern’s departure, it is intended to hold a conference of representatives of the Health Department, the B.M.A. and the Hospital Boards’ Association, to consider the recommendations in the report.
