GENERAL NEWS AND NOTES. The opening; of the fishing season is being looked forward to with special interest by disciples of Izaak Walton, and it is expected that the Waipukurau Hospital will benefit to the usual liberal extent by the catches of Saturday. Advantage was taken of the occasion of “ladies’ night” of the Orphans’ Club last evening to make a presentation to the infant daughter of Chief Orphan G. I, Chatwin this taking the form of a silver christening cup suitably inscribed. Senior ex-Chief W, G. Bryce made the presentation in a happy speech, which was followed by musical honours. Juveniles are looking forward wit! special interest to the annual school ball to be held to-night, and the function promises to be the usual popular success. The committee, headmaster, and staff, as well as other helpers, are sparing no effort to make the event a complete social and financial success. The credit balance will be devoted to the school prize fund, also assisting the school pastimes. The recent hospital ball was verysuccessful financially, as well as socially. The net proceeds were “130 1811, which carry a £ for £ subsidy. The proponents and those responding to the toasts of the “Rugby SubUnion,’’ also “Clubs and Players.” at the annual re-union of the Central Hawke’s Bay Rugby Referees’ Association on Tuesday night, paid warm tribute as to the sympathetic assistance received from the former, and to the pleasing relations that had existed in regard to almost all matters of mutual concern. The con. duct of players wB s remarked upon as being very helpful, few players having to be reported to the union, while none of the offences were serious. The weather continues to be stormy and cold. Further heavy showers of rain were experienced yesterday, 'as well as throughout the night. The countryside has received a thorouc soaking. Hall); national dance, "Sword Dance” (Orphan W. McKenzie): guitar duet, “Kaiwahau” (Orphans A. McLeod and Cooper); tenor solo, “Indian Dawn” (Orphan J. Boyce): supper—Orphans and Orpharines—owing to the quantity of discords, the management decided not to broadcast this item, which however was of a sumptuous character, Orphan D. Milne presiding; orchestra, “The Haymakers’ Picnic”: bass solo, “11 Lacerate Spirito” (Orphan E. Haldane); musical monologue. “My Love Affairs” (Orphan F. V. Ward! . violin solo, “La Paloma” (Orphan J. Windle); chimes, relay from G.P.0., Wanstead (Orphan bellringers); baritone solo. “The Song of the Bow” (Mr. E. G. Collins, of Ashlev Clinton) ; lecturette. “Hides and How to Cure Them” (Orphan J Hughes): instrumental quintette “Birth of Venus” (Orphans E. Reckin. E. H. Leigh, A. King, S. Annand, and S. H. Wood); baritone solo, “Unless” (Orphan H. M Tansley); National Anthem. The hall was very artistically decorated with streamers etc., embracing black and gold colours, special credit being due to Orphan Rcckin for this feature. LADIES’ HOCKEY. The following is the Waipukurau ladies’ seven-a-side hockey team to play in a tournament at Porangahau on Saturday;— Forward's: N Reidy, D. Hall, and 8. Maloney. Halves: A. Smales and E. Cooper. Backs: L. Sullivan and W. Richards. The team will leave by Mr. W Hall’s ca r Post Office at ’ o’clock. Any player unable to make the journey is asked to communicate with Mis s M. Oaskie.
