EXPLOSION AT RELIEF WORKS
MEACRE DETAILS AVAILABLE. FOREMAN’S ESCAPE. Nelson, September 28. Particulars available as to the cause of the premature explosion at Hope Junction are meagre. All three men, who were experienced in the class of work they were engaged in, were charging a hole when the explosion occurred. Rotherham and Phillips are believed to have been killed outright, while Gillespie received injuries which necessitated removal to the public hos pital. Both Rotherham and Phillips were standing close to the hole when the explosion occurred, and were badly mangled. Gillespie was a little in the rear and was protected from the full force of the explosion by one of his dead comrades. The foreman, E. Russ, was standing nearby, but escaped injury. The injuries to yillespie. consisting of a broken nose and face abrasions. are not considered serious
