MR. L. M. AMERY

VISIT TO DOMINIONS AUSTRALIAN DOMESTIC ISSUES. STATE GOVERNORSHIPS. London, Sept. -28. Upon the unbouted success of the Hon L. M. Amery’s mission in South Africa official circles in London are building, high hopes for the abiding results of the Australian tour, where he is taking up a miscellany of important domestic issues; for example, should now be taken to select the successor to Sir Tom Bridges hut nothing will be done until Mr Amery confers with the South Australian Cabinet, and in connection with that subject the opinions of all Australian Cabinets will be consulted upon the question of State Governorships, notably the States which have sent memoranda urging Australian appointees.

There is also the matter of a financiers’ and industrialists’ mission •from Britain to advise Australia upon migration development, as suggested by Mr Bruce and adopted by Mr Amery after the Imperial Conference. Although nothing has been officially announced, it is understood it has not been possible to overcome the difficulty of the influential persons chosen obtaining leave simultaneously and furthermore, of obtaining outstanding leaders for the mission, which might prove the turning point in Australia’s problems. Consequently it will be impossible for the mission to go in the present year. This does not mean an intention to abandon the scheme. No doubt Mr Amery and Mr Bruce will find occasion to discuss the difficulties and arrange for carrying out a plan in 1928 even wider in range.

Encouraged by the keenness which those who have been approached are manifesting, there is a marked feeling in London that Mr Amery, in view of recent comments concerning half heartedness over migration could not do better service than call a round table conference to remove difficulties and get the 34,000,000 scheme moving properly.—(A. and N.Z.)
