CRUEL TREATMENT
OF BRITISH EX-OFFICER U.S. JURY FAILS TO INDICT CAPTAIN. BRITISH GOVERNMENT WANTS TO KNOW WHY. (British Official Wireless.) (Received 28, 12 noon.) Rugby, Sept. 27. The British Government is telegraphing for a full report of the finding of the United States Federal gland jury which, according to ieports from New York, has refused to indict Captain Crawley, formerly in command of the American tanker Manatwny for cruel treatment of a British ex-officer, Frederick Thomas, during the voyage from Southampton last November. Thomas was engaged as steward on the Manatawny and it alleged that after falling against a steam pipe during rough weather and severely burning Itis hand and forearm he was taken from his bunk when delirious with pain and was handcuffed while a hosepipe was turned on him. The case has been the subject of official representations by the British Ambassador in Washington.
