CYCLONIC CONDITIONS AT GISBORNE RIVERS IN HIGH BLOOD. PUHA FLATS SUBMERGED. /Per Press Association). Gisborne. Sept; 28.. Cyclonic conditions prevailed for the last 24 hours and heavy fain fell overnight, a gauge at Te Karaka showing 4.64 inches. Rivers are in high flood being 4ft. deep at the Puha railway tunnel, a position which has not occurred for 11 years. The flats about Puha aio submerged but, so far the extensive Poverty Bay flat has not been affected though the river is reported as’ rising rapidly further back. BIG FLOOD AT WAIIIOA. WATERS REACH DECKING OF BRIDGE. Wairoa, Sept. 28. One of the biggest floods for many years occurred early this morning owing to an unprecented deluge in the last 24 hours resulting in the river being bank high. The water is almost up to the docking of the town bridge and both wharves are covered. All the town flats are a sea of water. Launches and boats were washed out to sea, also timber and goods stored on the wharves. There is no sign of the heavy rain abating and much more damage is feared with loss of stock. IN HAWKE’S BAY. RIVERS LITTLE AFFECTED. NO REPORTED DAMAGE TO FRUIT. Last evening the weather which had been bleak and threatening in the afternoon, broke into a ‘downpour of rain, driven by a strong gale from the soutn. These conditions continued during the night, but in the early morning. the -force of 11 storm moderated. The rainfall in Hustings for the hours previous to nine o’clock this morning registered two inches but, althougn there was a considerable quantity of snow on the ranges, the rivers were not visibly affected. From reports to hand up to noon the fruit crops have not been damaged. An exceedingly rough night was experienced in Havelock North yesterday, but fortunately, as far as can be learned, no damage was done. If the storm had been a week or two later the fruit trees must have suffered severely, but as it is. the fruit is not yet set sufficiently to suffer much. The rainfall measured at Te Mata was 2.65.
