Mr and Mrs J. Wellwood left Hastings this morning for Wellington on a visit.

Mr C. B. Butters has been appointed the Napier Harbour Board's London representative.

Messrs Grant and Don Davidson of Christchurch, are at present in Hastings on a visit to their aunt. Mrs J. Hislop.

Mr G. 1. B. Sheridan, assistant inspector in New Zealand, has been appointed manager of the Bank of New South Wales m Adelaide.

A message from Perth reports the death of the Hon. T. F. Quinlan, a former Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, aged 66.

Mr G. I*’. Uiupcutt (borough engineer) was last night complimented by the Napier Borough Council on the successful manner in which he had improved the drainage of the borough.

The death is announced of Mis Phyllis McLeay, wife of Mr Roderick McLeay who expired at the Napier Hospital this morning at the earlv age of 32 years.

Mr G. Reg. Cooke was yesterday appointed secretary to the Waipukurau A. and P. Association, in place of Mr W. F. O’uonnell. who has gone to Auckland.

Nurse Toliney, of tne staff of the Waipawa County Hospital, Waipukurau, has received advice that she has been successsful in passing her Stale examination in all subjects.

Mr W. J. McGrath, of Napier, is at present very seriously indisposed. At yesterday's meeting of the Napier Harbour Board a motion of sympathy with him in his illness was passed, Mr McGrath has been a prominent member of the Board for many years. The hope v expressed that he would souii . * cstored to good health.

The funeral of Mrs M. J. Mardon took place this afternoon, when the remains were interred in the Hastings cemetery, where the Rev. F. Copeland conducted the Methodist service at the graveside, in the presence of a large nuniber of mourners Several beautiful wreaths were placed on the grave.

Miss Greta Taylor, of Hastings, who was present at the Hawke’s Baynairarapa Shield match in Masterton last Saturday, attended a ball heid in the evening, when members of the Hawke’s Bay team and some Hastings visitors nominated her for a competition to decide who was the most popular girl in the hall. There were eleven candidates for the honour and Miss Taylor was acclaimed the most popular lady and was awarded as a trophy a beautiful pearl necklet.

The death is announced of Mr John Clark Shaw, who passed awav at his residence, Grove road. Hastings. on Monday last, at the age of 45. The deceased, who was an orchardist and a tomato grower, came out to New Zealand seven year* ago, settling in Hasti. a s. He served in the Imperial foices during the war. and he suffered from the eife< of his experience up to his dea the condition of his heart becomin gradually worse during the past twelve months. He was of a qiv and reserved disposition, and he wn = held in esteem by all who knew him The body was interred in the Hastings cemetery this afternoon, when the Rev. D. J. A. Shaw conducted the Presbyterian service at the graveside. General sympathy is extended to his sister and his cousin in their bereavement.
