LIVELY PROCEEDINGS.
NEW HOTEL WORKERS UNION. CHARGE AGAINST SECRETARY FAILS. Invercargill, Aug. 20. There were lively proceedings in the Magistrate’s Court to-day when three hotel workers sued Charles Provan, union secretary ,for 3/-, money paid by them as entrance fee to tlie new Southland Union of Hotel Workers, allegedly under a misapprehension, Mr. G. S. Thomson (Dunedin) appeared for the plaintiffs and he had many heated exchanges with coun. for the defence and with the defendant. These suggested that he was taking an opportunity for indulging in propaganda and that jealousy at the formation of a separate Southland union was the cause of the actions, which were engineered by the Otago union. Vehement denials came from Mr. Thomson. He hinted that the new union would be classed as a “scab” union and would not be admitted to affiliation with the federation.
The magistrate failed to see in what way the money had been paid under a misapprehension and dismissed the three cases.
