HAWKE'S BAY FRUIT EXPORT.
COOL STORAGE AVAILABLE. Advice has been received by the Hastings representative of the Fruit Export Control Board that cool storage is now available in Wellington, and further export consignments may be forwarded. Packing for export has been resumed and it is anticipated that a good quantity will be available for railing by Wednesday next, although it is probable that a certain amount already packed may be railed immediately, and a few consignments railed early next week. This fruit is being packed with no assurance from the Government that the guarantee will be extended to cover this extra quantity. It is an indication, however, of the confidence Hawke’s Bay fruitgrowers have in their own fruit, to be willing to accept a certain amount of risk and not to rely altogether on the Government to see them through their difficulties. REASONS FOR POOR PRICES. London, April 29. The special officer sent from Australia House to report on the marketing of apples at Liverpool, Manchester and Hull, states that prices were most disappointing despite the fact that the quality was good, though there were some exceptions. The setback m prices could be attributed partly to the presence of stored American apples, and partly to the arsenic scare, concerning American fruit, from which the public did not distinguish.
The Australian health officers ul three ports unanimously absolved Australian apples from containing sufficient arsenic to require action.—(A. and N.Z.)
