ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

INQUEST ON MOTOR FATALITY. Invercargill, April 29. At the inquest held regarding the Dipton smash on April 6, when Alexander McKenzie and Thomas Price, driver, were fatally injured, evidence was given that the car was travelling at 30 to 35 miles an hour. When it reached a stretch of loose ground, the back of the car swung round and then capsized, the car apparently travelling so fast that the driver could not keep it on the road. A verdict of accidental death was returned. BUS AND TRAM COLLISION. Auckland, April 29. At 8.35 this morning an Onehunga passenger bus collided with a tramcar at Broadway, Newmarket. The bus was full of passengers, and was behind one tram, which stopped to allow school children to alight. The driver of the bus evidently had trouble with his brakes. The bus swerved behind the first tram and crashed into another tram, which was obscured from his view. The bus was badly damaged. Three passengers were injured, but only one badly, namely. G. L. Gunson, who is in hos. pita I with a fracture of a small bone of the leg. MOTOR-CYCLE RIDERS INJURED Feilding, April 28. A collision occurred at Halcombe to-day between a car driven by Mr. O. Mcllroy, of Feilding, and a piotor cycle ridden by two men named Downes and Tairoa, of Rata. The latter were proceeding to a football match in‘Halcombe, and were members of the Rata team playing against Halcombe. The car and the motorcycle were both badly damaged, and the right feet of the riders of the cycle were injured. The car driver was uninjured. AUCKLAND WOMAN KILLED. WHILE RUNNING FOR TRAM. Auckland, April 29. Struck by a motor cur Miss Catherine May Smyth, aged 31 years, received iatal injuries when running to catch a tramcar m Patterson street, Freeman s Bay, at 7.3 U to-nigut. Miss Smyth received terrible head injuries and a compound frocture of the right leg just aoove the ankle. Death was almost instantaneous.

Miss Smyth and her younger sister, Annie, were running across from Franklin road to catch the Herne Bay tram standing in Patterson street. Miss Annie bmyth was in the lead and cleared the motor coming from the city, driven by J. Brady, taxidriver, of 34 Wood street, Freeman’s Bay. Miss Catherine Smyth was struck heavily and carried a lew yards before being thrown clear. Mr. Brady at once wheeled his car and returned to the scene of the accident. Miss Smyth was thrown heavily on the concrete road, and although the St. John’s Ambulance was on the scene within three minutes she was already past succour. The body, which was shockingly mutilated, was removed to the hospital morgue. Miss Smyth had resided with her parents at 8 Collingwood street, Ponsonby, and had left her home but a few minutes before the fatal accident. FATAL HIT BY ENGINE. Auckland, April 29. Gordon Munes, aged 17, Post Office cadet, was struck by an engine while crossing the railway line at the Ellerslie station last night. He sustained a fractured skull and injuries to the back, from which he succumbed shortly after admission to hospital. WAIROA MAN HANGED. William Hanry Besnnt, a middle aged, married man, employed at tho Wairoa freezing works, langcd himself this morning at his residence. HANGING FROM APPLE TREE. Gisborne, April 30. William Besant. an old identity of Wairoa, was found dead earl? tiiis morning hanging from an apple tree in his garden at North Clyde.
