HASTINGS BOROUGH COUNCIL.

FORTNIGHTLY MEETING. | The final meeting of the council for the year 1925 was held last night, Mr. G. A. Maddison presiding. Messrs. RBaker. S. J. McKee, P. M. Cohr, M. Johnson, E. C. Lowe, T. R. E. Hay, J. Simmons and E. V. Simpson were also present. 'The Public Trust Urtice advised that, from January 1, 1926, the interest allowed on local body sinking tunas and superannuation tunas would be increased by a quarter per cent.—Received. The ‘‘Hawke’s Bay Tribune” wrote saying that the £4B 8/-, received in connection with the Massey Memorial Fund, had been forwarded to Mr. T. Shailer \\ eston, of Wellington.—Received. Miss Elder asked if the council would allow her a fortnight’s salary instead of her annual leave, which she had been unable to take when she left the council’s employ to take up a new appointment .--Tire application was granted, the Mayor saying that Miss Elder had been in the council's employ for eight years and she was entitled to her holiday. 'l’lie Now Zealand Society of Civil Engineers advised that the conference of the society would open in Dunedin ; on February 16th, and asked that the council’s engineers be allowed to attend.—Left in the hands of the Mayor. W. McCulloch offered, on the part of Mrs. Deans and Miss Russell, to pay £34 (£3 capitalised for 20 years) as a lump sum to provide for the installation and permanent upkeep of a | light in the right-of-way at the back of their shops in Heretaunga street. — i The upkeep is estimated to cost £3 , per annum.—Accepted. Sergeant Hogan intimated that the : police were looking out for offenders • who cycled on the footpaths.—Re- ; ceived. Hawke’s Bay County Council forwarded a cheque for £1.689 12/-, on account of bitumen surfacing of the Havelock North-Hastings road.—Received. W. Gladman, on behalf of Mrs. Gladman, with reference to the sewering of her property in Burnett street, asked for an extension of ti,me to the beginning of March next, and undertook that the present premises shall not be occupied thereafter.—Granted. Six residents of Prospect road asked that at least a portion of the shingle being carted from the council’s pit along Prospect roa<T. from morning to night, be diverted, so as to abate the dust nuisance, and that a water cart be used on the road twice a day.—The engineer said the matter was attended to. GENERAL. Crs. Hay, Baker and Simmons reported that Miss D. Taylor had been appointed to the positon of junior tj piste.—Adopted. Cr. Johnson and the town clerk recommended that the salary of Miss Lys be increased from £ll5 to £145 on taking up her duties as senior typiste, and that Miss Heaton’s salary be increased from £B5 to £lO4 on taking over the duties now carried on by Miss Lys.—Adopted. The Mayor moved as follows:—That pursuant to the provisions of the Rating Amendment Act, 1910, 10 per cent, be added to all rates fo.r the year 1925-26 unpaid at the expiraton of sx months and fourteen days from the demand thereof, and that public notice be given by advertisement that all rates unpaid at the expiration of fourteen days from the date of such advertisement will be sued for without further notice.—Carried. Mr. Gibson applied to the council fqr permission to hold the Nelson Street Hall Sunday School’picnic at ’ Beat son Park on January Ist, and for permission for the children to use the swimming pool.—Granted, on condition that fires be made in the fireplace provided for that purpose.
