NAPIER MOTOR BY-LAWS.

TAXI-DRIVER FINED, At the Napper Magistrate’s Court yesterday afternoon, before Mr. R. W. Dyer, S.M., Ernest Wall, a motor driver employed by Nowrick’s Motor Service Co.. Hastings, was charged with permitting a car to. stand for more than twenty minutes in Emerson street on November 29 and with driving a car across the Hastings-Emerson street junction at a speed exceeding eight miles an hour. Mr. B. J. Dolan, who appeared for the defendant, entered a plea of not guilty. James Peters, inspector on Napiei trams, stated that at 9.10 p.m. on November 29 he noticed defendant come down from tho Parade at a speed he estimated to be not less than 15 miles an hour. Constable Bacon said that he was at the intersection when he saw the defendant’s car come across at a speed of at least 15 miles an hour. Witness could not secure the number so ne followed on down tho street until he located the car outside the Provincial Hotel. This was at 9.25 p.m. "Witness waited until 10.3 p.m. before defendant put in an appearance. The defendant stated that on the Sunday night ho left th© Parade after the band concert at 9.30 p.m. and proceeded down into Emerson street in low gear. Crossing the intersection witness put the car into second gear the speed being about five miles an hour. After parking his car at the Provincial Hotel witness went up the street and then met Constable Bacon who argued with his for about ton minutes. Alexander Cushing, a passenger in the car, gave corroborative evidence concerning the speed of the car. His Worship said that he was satisfied that there was a clear case against defendant and fined him £1 and 17/costs on the first charge, and £1 and 19/- costs on the second.
