ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES.

KNOCKED DOWN BY MOTOR. CHILD KILLED AND ANOTHER INJ URED. (Per Press Association.) New Plymouth, Dec. 21. A girl aged six was killed and another girl aged three lies in hospital in a critical condition as a result of being knocked over by a motor car in New Plymouth this afternoon. The children were Gladys May O’Dea, aged six years and nine months, daughter of Mr. E. O’Dea, railway employee, 51 Hine street, killed, and Doreen Walsh, aged three years and six months, daughter of Mr. Edward Walsh, labourer, same address, serious injuries to the head, condition critical. The accident occurred in St. Aubyn street, close to Morley street intersection, shortly after 4.30 p.m. Thomas Henry Lovegrove, stevedore, of \\ anganui, was driving a motor car towards the breakwater, and is stated to have been travelling on his correct side of the road and at a. slow speed, a tramcar being near the children. Apparently the}- were on the footpath, and then suddenly ran in front of the car. Lovegrove immediately pulled his car up but the distance was too short to enable him to avoid the children. Both wore struck on the head. The little girl O’Dea was dead when picked up, death being considered to have been instantaneous. Medical assistance was immediately obtained and Doreen Walsh was sent to hospital, where just before midnight her condition was reported to be critical. AN OARSMAN DROWNED. Invercargill, Dec. 21.

At about 3.30 on Saturday afternoon one of the Railway Rowing Club’s boats was overturned in the New river estuary. Leonard Warburton and William O'Neill, who were in the boat, got into difficulties at once, neither being able to swim. A launch passing went to their aid, but both youths sank. O’Neill was rescued by the launch, but Warburton could not be found. A- search was made by the crews of the Rowing Club, and Warburton’s body was recovered about II o’clock the same night. The boat in which the accident occurred was an ordinary pleasure boat.
