Horseowners and trainers are reminded that acceptances for the first day of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s summer meeting close with the secretary (Mr. H. S. Moss) at 8 p.m. tomorrow (Tuesday). DIVOTS. Dug by “The Del ver.” To-night, by 8 o’clock, first-day acceptances have to be in for the Wairarapa New Year meetings, and tomorrow (Tuesday), those for the Hawke’s Bay (8 p.m.), Marton and Stratford summer fixtures are due. From information received in Wellington it is understood that there wnl be no division of the A.R.C. Railway Handicap field if, by further scratchings before going to the post, it is reduced from 31, as at present, to 25 in number. The name of King Smock does not appear in the telegraphed list of acceptors for the Auckland Cuj> as published in either the Wellington or Palmerston North morning papers of Saturday last. It would almost look as if it had got into the Hawke’s Bay press lists in error. Mr. W. P. Russell, of Wellington, has received the appointment of handicapper to the Ohinemuri Jockey Club The strong magnetic attraction of Ellerslie at this season of the year is shown by the facts that when the special horse train left Wellington on Friday there were over 40 horses in the boxes, and that when it left Marton there were over 70. Wellington opinion is that Trentham stables hold a strong hand in the Fitzlierbert Handicap with Grand Knight, Orchid and Ilka. There, too, Enthusiasm and Ngata are said to be regarded as having as good chances as any in the Manawatu Cup. “Musketoon was never better or fitter in his life than he is at the present time,” is the verdict of one considered a very good judge in Auckland. Marqueteur, who is not nominated at the holiday meetings, is said to be showing all his old dash on the tracks at Hawera. and. although getting up in years, has only to stand up to his work to win further races. Rafa’s better showing on the second day than on the first at Woodville is evidently encouraging his trainer to persevere with his education as a hurdler. The rather obstreperous Potoa gelding is said to have jumped in goocl style in a schooling lesson last week. Grand Knight’s good gallop at Trenthan on Thursday has brought him into favour for the open six at Awapuni. He has lots of pace, and is said to be looking and galloping better now than ever before. —“Carbine.” Ilka is galloping so well on the Trentham tracks that the local early birds regard her with respect for any of the sprint events she contests during the holidays. Peneus is expected to be somewhere about his very best for the coming meeting at Awapuni and. if so, he must be a hard nut for the other sprinters engaged there to crack. Nine yearlings from Mr. I. G. Duncan’s Waikanae Stud will be sold at auction during the progress of the "Wellington Racing Club’s meeting next month. Five of the youngsters are by Paper Money and four by Kilbroney. According to his trainer. Commendation has a most even temperament, and travelling or new surroundings do not seem to unset him in any way. Ellerslie track-watchers are, of course, greatly taken with his action since arrival there. Up to time of writing no explanation has been suggested as to the disappearance of both Fool’s Paradise and Black Cat from the A.R.C. Railway Handicap field. Both are reported from Wellington as having actually left by the special horse train on Friday morning, and even yesterday a Wellington morning paper was discussing their prospects in that race, saying that it was the intention to start the two. It appears that the 4-year-old Lucullus—Congress gelding Dave, who ran two firsts and a second at Dargaville

last week, is affected in the wind. He is said to have a great dash of speed, and but for the trouble mentioned might succeed in much better company than he was meeting on the North Auckland course. In Taranaki they are very keen on the chances of Muraahi in the Auckland Cup, and wagers have been made that he will finish in front of Te Monanui. -Muraahi has a liking for the Ellerslie course. Ho dead-heated with To Kara in the Cup two years ago, and in the same season won the Racing Club Handicap, rejieating the latter victory last New Year’s Day. The Campfire gelding is now in his Bth yeai. T hose in a position to know state that the recent track work of Mask at Wanganui gives him a bettor prospect in the Great Northern Derby than is likely to be credited him by the bettmg public at Ellerslie. Mask, who is a half brother to The Monk and Rational, is by Limond. The Monk, by Absurd, was a winner over middle distances. and a splendid weight carrier, so it may be that Mask will be found running well over a distance of ground. Writing of the team that F. D. Jones has brought north for the Manawatu and Marton meetings a Christchurch writer says; “Bank Note has been sore lately, and it would occasion no surprise if he forfeited his earlier engagements. Zaragoza is reported ro be doing exceptionally Well on the Ricca rton track, and provided she races up to her track form, she should not return without a share of the prizemouey. Economist appears to have trained on satisfactorily, and he will be the mainstay of Jones’s team. In addition to being a good galloper, ho stays on fairly well.” Wenday, who won twice at Dargaville, is a three-year-old filly by Day ( omet-—Wenonah, and is trained by A. J. Julian at Ellerslie. Her only previous placing was third in a hack race at the last TVaikato meeting. The Merry Moment—En Parole gelding Right and Left, who won the Dargaville Cun, had a good record as a two-year-old. being only twice out of place in fourteen starts. Ho won onry one race as a three-year-old and failed to score at four, five and six .years of age. Last season he won four country events, including the Dargaville Cup. Herculean, who foil at the Waipa meeting in a flat race, is the horse who tumbled at the Takapuna J.C. fixture of November. 1924. On that occasion he brought down Gold Sovereign and Passionate, the latter being ridden by A. J. McFlynn, who died as the result of the injuries he received. There were no serious consequences from his blunder at Te Rana. A New Plymouth report states that on Thursday morning Te Monanui and Mint Leaf jumped off at the half-mile post, and gradually went faster, being picked up at the seven-furlong post by Royal Mint. Mint Leaf pulled off at the three-furlong' post. Te Monanui went on and just beat Royal Mint at the finish. The last seven furlongs was run in Imin 34sec, and the full distance. about a mile and three furlongs, was left behind in 2min 42sec. It was a fair gallop, with the Auckland Cup candidate finishing on at the right end. The gallop of the morning at Hawera on Thursday was a try-out over mi'os bv the Auckland Cup candidate. The Banker (Ingram), and the Great Northern Derby candidate. Star Area (lightweight). Jumping off at the two furlong post, both horses kept together (running the first half-mile in 50secs), and were picked up by Marqueteur (Morris) at tho six-furlong post. From that point the three horses were in a Imo the whole wav (Star Area on the lense. The Banker in the centre, and Marqueteur on the outside), and there were only heads between them at the finish. The full journey took 2min lOsec. Both horses for Ellerslie went well, especially The Banker and the effort must have ben pleasing to the horses’ connections.

Mr. J. Barnes, president of the New South Wales Trotting Association, is a visitor to Wellington, and is staying at the Grand Hotel.

Tripod, a three-year-old by Surveyor from the Feramorz mare Stein, won the fourth division of the Novice Handicap at the Rosebery Pony Races on December sth. This is a very modest initial success for the gallant old Nassau horse’s progeny, but it will be a wonder if one op other of them does not achieve something of more note. The old fellow is himself still' “going strong” on the tracks at Ellerslie. Another N.Z. pony. Predominate (Nassau—Matliy), was again a winner last week, getting home first in a division of the Fourteen Hands Handicap at Ascot (Sydney).
