NOVEAIBER IMPORTS AND EXPORTS. TURN OF THE INDUSTRIAL TIDE. London, Dec. 10. British imports in November were valued at £114,693,000 and exports £60,977,000, an increase o.f £5,854,000 and a decrease of £6150 respectively, compared with October. In a speech at Ponfy’pool, Sir A. D. Steel-Maitland said it Was unquestion able that the industrial tide had turn cd. The cotton trade was very much better, woollen trade was quite distinctly better and engineering was improving.—(Reuter).
FOREIGN COMPETITION. AUSTRALIAN MONEY SPENT ABROAD. Sydney, Dec. 10. Mr Hudson, president of the Australian Association of British Manufactures, speaking at the annual meeting of the association, said that last year Australia bought nearly £5O, 000,000 worth of competitive goods from countries other than the United Kingdom. He strongly criticised tho tendency now showing itself to use Empire capital in supporting foreign production. ITe said tho association had reliable information that in building the Feder a! Parliament House at Canberra a large order was placed with the United States for door and window fittings, for which the British manufacturer was not given an opportunity to quote. Ho also instanced tiie Government bank in Sydney obtaining locks and hardware fittings in the United States, and tho South Australian railways, which were getting over £1,000,000 wor’i of railway waggons from the United States.
