HASTINGS-HAVELOCK ROAD.
GOOD WORK WITH BITUMEf SURFACING. The Hawke’s Bay County Council strip of bitumen-surfaced road, irom the Havelock North bridge to the Hastings borough boumdary. is now well more than half completed, under the supervision of Mr. C. E. Evans, Hastings borough engineer, who hopes to have the work finished bv Christmas. The width of tho road treated is 18 feet, laid down in heavy penetration, which makes, the surface more heat-resisting than is the case with the lighter bitumen. On either side of the bitumen surface a shelving edge of shingle, 18 inches wide, penetrated with bitumen, forms a protection lor lhe edges, which wouict otnerwise.be broken hv* the outside traffic crossing over to tlie surl’aod part of tho road. SHINGLING BOROUGH ROADS. The borough engineer says that he is placing light shingle over the bitumen surfacing in tho borough (which is softening under tho heat of the sun) with beneficial effect. He points out that the lighter grade of bitumen used on the roads thus affected is more susceptible to the hot weather than the heavier bitumen which is now being employed in road construction, and the roads being made are much better calculated to resist the rays or the sun. although there would, oi course, be some “bleeding.” A reasonable amount of “bleeding” showed that the material was “alive, ’ and it was looked for.
