FALLEN ON EVIL DAYS.
“YOUNG- GRIFFO” DESTITUTE. (Received 10. 9.55 a.m.) New York, Dec. 9. “Young Griffo.” the Australian boxer, whose name was once a byword throughout American sporting circles, is now utterly destitute. He sits nightly on the steps of a Broadway motion picture theatre miserably clad and begging small coins from passersby.
u Griffo” came to the United States when 22 years of age. Ho is now 55. He was noted in the days of tho saloons for his trick oi’ laying a handkerchief on the floor, stepping thereon, and betting any one any sum that they could not hit his lace, even though he held his hands to his sides. It is his boast that he never lost such a bet, except to a trained boxer. “Griffo” is credited with knowing more boxing tricks than any other pugilist of the period. Ho was recognised, while begging, by Peter Kenny, an who is trying to interest Australians nere to arrange a benefit. “Griffo” was reported dead, owing to mistaken identification.—(A. and N.Z.)
