C.P.R. LINER MURDER.
TOWERS ON TRIAL
(Received G. 1.30 p.m.) London, Nov. 0. Towers was charged with the murder of Captain Clews and the attempted murder of Gilmour and Holliday. Pros'* uting counsel .-aid that the accused, after the tragedy, stated ho intended to kill Clews. Gilmour. McLennan (purser) and himself. but the revolver fai cd. Counsel expre-sed tne opinion tnat the prisoner was doubtless suffering fr..m the idea that he w«s eing persecuted and was brooding over his lack of progress in the service. Medical evidence was gi.en that lowers wa» p>i\sicaily lit and mentally sound.—(Reuter). Towers, first officer on the C.P.R. liner Melita, went to the captain's cabin when the liner was at Antwerp and shot him through the head. Ho then went to the cabin of the first engineer, Holliday whom ho shot in the nose. The set >nd engineer, ( imiour. who wa s among other officers attrac ed by the noise, was shot twice in the lungs. Towers was taken to Eu J:md where he was charged with murder.
