WAIPUKURAU.

chamber of commerce. (Own Correspondent.) A general meeting of the Chamber of Commerce was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall last evening. Mr. W. Johnston. (president) was in the chair and there was a moderate attendance. The chairman reported on the several matters that had engaged the attention of the committee during the past two months. The Minister had definitely declined to re-open the post. office for an hour at night, on the par-I ticular plea that the telephone service | had substantially replaced telegraphic needs and the prospective business would not warrant the re-opening. The position of the nightwatchman had been placed on a more satisfactory footing. The number of subscribers had been increased by five and some of the subscribers had agreed to pay a larger amount weekly. The committee had also made further representations for the retention of the Howard bequest for agricultural instruction in Hawke's Bay; had supported the es- i tablishment of a dental clinic at Wai- ! pukurau; took action in reference to the hospital district severance, the : extension of postal delivery within and | outside the borough, and in connection with securing a rural mail delivery round Hatuma. Flemington, Wanstead and Porangahau road. The chairman . considered that some good would result from the activity of the chamber. ft was decided to affiliate with the Associated Chambers of Commerce, and Mr. A. Keerse was appointed delegate . to the annual conference at Wanganui this month. A motion was carried complimenting the Borough Council on its timely ac- i tion in securing a dental clinic for Waipukurau. A member urged the importance of industries in the town, and mentioning woollen mills as offering a scope if they could secure the right man to get the scheme going. It was mentioned that Waipukurau was the centre of a great wool area; that more wool was sent from the Otane railway, station than any other station in the North Island, and that there was more wool around Waipukurau than any other part of Hawke’s Bay. it was pointed out that | Waipukurau should not have lost the Whakatu meat works, and timely action would help in getting woollen mills. I The condition of the main street was ’ discussed and it was pointed out that the question was becoming one of great urgency, and it was inadvisable to delay a properly laid-down roadway. Lt was decided to call the Borough. Council’s attention to the need for the work and expressing the hope that a start would be made in the near future. A bitumen road is extimated to cost over £7OOO and the Borough Council proposal is to incorporate road improvement generally in a big loan proposal at some future date. NEW VICAR WELCOMES). Canon E. Rice, of Napier, who is succeeding the Rev. A. W. Stace as vicar at Waipukurau, was inducted by the Bishop of Waiapu last evening. 1 There was a large attendance of parishioners, and a welcome social was tendered after the impressive ceremony GENERAL. The rainfall during October totalled 7.17 inches. There were eleven *• eb days. On the 31st the fall was 2.93 inches. The Tuki Tuki and local streams have all been in high flood i nd lowlying property inundated. The flood water has now receded. The vital statistics for the past month, with the figures for the same month last year, are:—Births 5 (3), deaths 5 (11), marriages 2 (1). Mr. J. R.
